The Food and Drug Administration has issued two safety warnings about the new drug Viagra that could potentially lead to serious heart complications. In a letter issued Thursday, FDA Commissioner Margaret Atatieri said the agency's warning labels will be updated, so that "any information contained in the label that suggests an increased risk for heart disease associated with sildenafil, or any information that suggests a different increased risk from other drugs may be contained in the label." The agency added that the warning labels are based on previous warnings from the agency about the dangers of taking sildenafil and certain cardiovascular drugs.
The warning about the new drug has been issued as "serious" and "potentially life-threatening," and it was updated to include the following, but not the first warning: "Viagra may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events including heart attack, stroke, heart failure, heart attack, and death, particularly in the elderly and those with pre-existing heart disease."
Viagra was approved by the FDA in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, according to the FDA.
The FDA says Viagra is the only drug approved to treat erectile dysfunction. It was first approved in 1998 by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration. In 2002, the FDA said the agency had issued "serious" warnings about Viagra's cardiovascular risks, including the potential for heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and death.

"I have been pleased with the agency's latest and most aggressive response to this issue."
Viagra is available by prescription only.
The drugmaker, which filed for FDA approval in 1998, has said it would not be making any changes to the labels, including Viagra, because it is concerned that other drugs may increase the risk for cardiovascular events.
Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor. It also is a PDE5 inhibitor.
The company's statement said the new warnings have been published in theJournal of the American Medical AssociationandEuropean Journal of Clinical Trial Evaluations.
In the letter, Atatieri said, "These warnings are based on FDA and EU clinical trial data and do not take the place of recommendations made by the agency's drug benefit managers" and other regulatory bodies.
Atatieri also said the new information should be used only for educational purposes, and the agency will continue to monitor the safety of the drug.
The agency is seeking FDA approval to sell the drug to U. patients for less than a dollar per month.
In the letter, FDA issued a warning about the risk of serious cardiovascular events including heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and death.
The agency said the FDA does not recommend that patients stop taking sildenafil and other PDE5 inhibitors as part of a heart attack or stroke prevention plan that includes a PDE5 inhibitor. However, it did not recommend that patients stop taking sildenafil because it is associated with an increased risk for heart attack and stroke.
The warning was based on information provided by a review of patients who took sildenafil and who had other risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other conditions.
Dr. Andrew Gaj, a physician at the University of Michigan's School of Medicine, said the FDA's warning about the risk of serious heart problems could be helpful for other physicians.
